Are your lips losing their plumpness and fullness? There are many reasons both men and women choose the option of a lip filler to combat the early signs of aging, such as a decrease in lip volume. At Laser Health Works in Barrie, Ontario, we understand that patients have many options for filler treatment.
What Is a Lip Filler?
A lip filler is a compound designed to safely and effectively add volume to the lips. The most commonly-used lip fillers on the market today contain a substance called hyaluronic acid, or HA, which is mixed with saline (salt water). Lip fillers are often found in gel form and come in pre-measured syringes. The amount contained in each syringe varies by product.
The primary ingredient in most fillers, hyaluronic acid (HA), occurs naturally in the body as a chief component of connective tissue such as the skin. The fact that our bodies naturally create HA means the likelihood of a patient having a reaction to the compound is very low. The amount of hyaluronic acid in our bodies declines as we age, resulting in wrinkles, lines, and a decrease in the fullness of the lips.
Many of the popular and frequently-used products available today also contain lidocaine, a pain reliever. Having lidocaine contained within the injectable solution means there is little or no pain during or after treatment.
What Are the 4 Best Lip Fillers?
While there are a number of dermal fillers available, there are a select few that are specifically designed for use in the lips. While the majority of lip-volumizing products are quite similar, there are a few notable differences.
Juvederm is a well-known dermal filler injectable. There are two Juvederm products used specifically for injecting into the lips: Juvederm Ultra XC for lip augmentation, and Juvederm Volbella XC for vertical lip lines and slight lip volume.
Both products are hyaluronic-acid based fillers. They produce near-instant results that last around a year. Both products contain lidocaine to reduce any discomfort during or after treatment. Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella XC produce smooth, even results, and both can be easily removed if results are unsatisfactory. Treatment with either Juvederm Ultra XC or Juvederm Volbella XC, while long-lasting, will require additional treatments to maintain results.
Treatment with Juvederm takes an average of 15 to 60 minutes to administer. There is no requirement for downtime following treatment; patients can return to work the same day in most cases. These are some of the longest-lasting fillers available, only requiring re-application about once a year, so overall treatment cost may run lower than with other products. Post-procedure recommendations include avoiding strenuous activities, alcohol, and sun exposure or tanning beds for at least 24 hours in addition to avoiding heat from hot baths, saunas, or similar sources.
Another popular and well-known dermal filler is Restylane. The formulation used for lip augmentation and to smooth lip lines is called Restylane Silk. Restylane Silk was the first lip filler approved by the FDA. Restylane Silk is hyaluronic-acid based. The product contains lidocaine to reduce pain during and after treatment. Results, which are smooth and even, show in a few days and last about 10 months. The product is easily removed if the results are unsatisfactory.
Injection of Restylane Silk is an outpatient procedure that takes about 15 to 60 minutes to perform. The treatment is noninvasive and requires no downtime. Patients can return to normal activities shortly after leaving our office. Additional injections are required to maintain results after the 10-month timeframe.
Post-procedure recommendations include avoiding strenuous activities, alcohol, and sun exposure or tanning beds for at least 24 hours. It is also important to avoid extremely cold weather.
Another hyaluronic-acid based dermal filler is Belotero. As with other options, treatment times are in the range of 15 to 60 minutes. The injection location, either the vermillion border or into the lips, is dependent on the desired outcome.
Results are immediate and last 6-12 months depending on which Belotero product is used. Patients should avoid strenuous activities, alcohol, sun exposure or tanning beds, and exposure to extreme heat for at least 24 hours after treatment.
Finally, there is Prevelle Silk, another HA-based lip filler containing lidocaine. Treatment time runs approximately 30 minutes on average. Results with this product are immediate and last three to four months. The short duration makes this product a good choice for first-time filler users who want to get an idea of the outcome of therapy.
This is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by most insurance. See our staff about payment plans or plan to pay cash.
Am I a Good Candidate for Treatment?
Patients who are allergic to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine should avoid treatment, as should those who have inflammatory skin conditions (eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis) or bleeding disorders. The use of this and all dermal fillers is prohibited in pregnant or breastfeeding women due to unknown safety hazards and should be avoided by those taking medications that make you prone to infection.
