What is Scar Revision?
Due to previous surgical procedures or injuries, visible scars can develop on multiple areas of the body and cause embarrassment in social situations or in instances where these areas are exposed. Scar revision treatments utilize laser and light technologies to target scar tissue at a cellular level below the skin surface, improving the look and feel of the skin from the inside out.
At Laser Health Works, we utilize CO2 laser resurfacing, Metvix, and biopsy for scar revision.
CO2 Laser Resurfacing
One of the most advanced laser surfacing techniques, CO2 laser resurfacing offers the ability to target specific areas of the face while maintaining the integrity of surrounding skin and tissues. Using short-pulsed, fractionated laser technology, small areas of the scar tissue are treated at a time, removing thin layers of skin at a time while creating minimal heat damage.
Metvix is a light-activated topical cream photosynthesizer that is absorbed by damaged skin cells. When exposed to either photodynamic therapy or sunlight, Metvix destroys damaged cells and reduces the appearance of visible scarring. As the cream is only absorbed by treated areas, surrounding skin is left undamaged.
Biopsies are a common practice for gathering tissue that requires further medical testing, but it can also be an effective method for superficial scar removal. Using a specially-designed medical tool, the scar tissue is removed in thin slices, completely removing it from the skin while leaving deeper dermal layers untouched. Once scar tissue is removed, surrounding skin can be feathered in order to naturally blend the area.
During your consultation with our medical team, your individual condition will be evaluated in order to determine which scar revision procedure is right for you as well as what the extent of your procedure will be and any relevant safety information that may apply to you.
