What is a Migraine?
A migraine is a type of severe headache. The pain of a migraine is often described as a pulsing or throbbing sensation. Individuals experiencing them often report feeling an unusually strong sensitivity to light and sound, often accompanied by nausea. These headaches can last anywhere between four hours and three days.
While most people experience at least a few migraines in their lifetime, chronic migraine is a serious recurrent neurological condition. Individuals with chronic migraines experience 15 or more headaches per month, with each headache lasting four or more hours. At least eight of these fifteen headaches have to be migraines in order for a patient to be diagnosed with this condition.
How Can BOTOX® Help Relieve Migraines?
There are two primary ways of managing chronic migraines: acute medication and preventative medication. Acute medication is taken when a migraine has already begun to stop or reduce the pain. Preventative medication is taken to prevent migraines from occurring altogether. BOTOX® is the only FDA-approved preventative treatment for chronic migraines.
BOTOX® is comprised of botulinum toxin A, a neuromodulator that can interrupt the nerve signal from nerves to the muscles. This muscle paralysis can last up to three months. During this time, decreased neurological activity helps lower both the frequency and intensity of migraines.
What Should I Expect from Treatment?
During each BOTOX® treatment, patients are administered 31 injections in seven key areas of the head and neck. These injections are administered using fine needles, so the pain experienced is no more than a pinprick. These injections need to be administered once every 12 weeks in order to effectively prevent migraines. While most patients experience no downtime, the most common side effect of treatment is neck pain. Fortunately, this typically subsides within a few days.
