Mature adults usually experience the first signs of aging on their face. The skin becomes more brittle, smile lines and crow’s feet become more visible around the eyes and mouth and discolorations become more prominent. Abrasive resurfacing procedures can actually cause more problems than they solve, and peel treatments often result in bleaching.
Promoting newer, healthier skin growth is the best way to reverse these visible signs of aging. Platelet-rich plasma therapy was first used to treat injuries to joints, tendons and ligaments, but it can be an effective growth stimulator for the skin as well. PRP injections kick-start the production of healthier skin by introducing special growth factors found in blood platelets.
Using Blood as a Growth Stimulator
Blood contains water, proteins, white and red cells and platelets. Platelets aid in clotting, when the blood is exposed to oxygen. This is why a dried blood mesh forms around a cut or scrape. The growth factors in platelets act as messengers for nutrients supplied by the blood, and this increases the speed at which the body regenerates lost tissue, particularly skin tissue.
When concentrated and mixed with a special gel, PRP can accelerate the growth of healthy tissue simply by combining with nutrients sent to the area via the bloodstream. When injected beneath the skin, the growth of healthier tissue decreases the appearance of wrinkles, frown lines, small skin creases and discolorations, such as acne scars.
How the Procedure is Performed
We will first consult with the client and look closely at the areas of concern. These are usually smile lines and other wrinkles, discolorations caused by medium-depth injury scars and other skin tone abnormalities. If we determine that PRP injections can help, we will outline a treatment plan for the client. In many cases, PRP injections are given multiple times, scheduled a few weeks apart. This gives the skin time to reproduce.
We take a small amount of blood from the patient, spin it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma and platelets from the red cells and then mix the PRP with a gel. The targeted area receiving the injection will plump slightly for a few hours, but the PRP mixture will spread out soon, leaving the skin smooth once more.
The full effect of the PRP treatments may take about two months or more. In time, the subdermal tissues and lower dermal layers will begin to produce new tissue that is healthier than what is being replaced. Given the opportunity to create healthier skin tissue, the body discards unhealthy tissue, such as scar tissue. The skin also thickens and collagen production increases, so wrinkles become far less visible.
