A skin tag sticks out of the skin and may have a short, narrow stalk connecting it to the surface of the skin. It is usually small, but can be as much as a half-inch long. In most cases the skin tag is the same color as the person’s skin, or sometimes a bit darker. Skin tags are painless however, they may be irritated from rubbing on clothing.

If there is any suspicion a biopsy may be done. In many cases the patient wishes to have them removed for aesthetic reasons. It is not recommended that patients remove skin tags themselves – often home remedy treatment options are disappointing. Treatment at our office is simple, relatively painless and cost effective.

Treatment Options

  • Electrocautery

We use electrocautery to remove skin tags with minimal pain and  scarring.   Our medical team will use this method and in most cases  they can be removed without any topical anesthesia. In some cases  larger skin tags may require some topical anesthesia  or a small  amount of xylocaine injected into the area prior to the procedure.

  • C02 Laser Treatment

CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) Laser Treatment is an effective procedure to  remove skin tags.  Laser removal has less scarring, pain and bruising  compared to methods that used to be used more frequently such as

cryosurgery (freezing) or excision using a surgical blade.  With the  C02 Laser Treatment there is no bleeding during the procedure as the  laser coagulates blood vessels.

CO2 laser treatments are quick, simple and effective.  Post treatment  protocol involves using Polysporin and a band-aide if needed and the  avoidance of soaking the area for the next 5-7 days..( ie no baths,  hot tubs) (but showers are allowed.)
